Prosthetics (Dental Crowns)

A crown is a prosthesis that completely covers the surface and shape of a tooth from above, creating a new outer shell for the tooth. Crowns are used in cases where a tooth is damaged, decayed, has large fillings, or after root canal treatment. They can enhance the appearance, functionality, and strength of the tooth, giving it a natural look. Crowns can be made from various materials such as ceramic, metal-ceramic (a combination of metal and ceramic), gold, or even modern polymer materials.

Distinguishing features from veneers:

The main difference between crowns and veneers lies in their construction and purpose. Crowns cover the entire surface of the tooth, while veneers only cover the front part. Crowns are more often used to restore chewing function and the strength of damaged teeth, whereas veneers are more focused on aesthetic improvements. Veneers require less tooth preparation before placement, which may be preferable for patients seeking minimal removal of dental tissue.

During the consultation, the dentist will assess your situation, goals, and preferences to recommend the best option—whether crowns or veneers—based on your needs.

Consultation and Planning: At this stage, the dentist conducts an examination of your tooth, determines the need for a crown, and discusses your preferences. X-rays may also be taken for a more detailed analysis.

Tooth Preparation: The dentist begins preparing the tooth for the crown installation. This may involve removing damaged parts of the tooth and shaping it to accommodate the crown. The tooth may also be trimmed to enhance the crown's adhesion.

Impression Taking: After preparing the tooth, an impression may be taken to create an accurate model of the tooth and the surrounding area. The impression is used to make temporary custom crowns.

Temporary Crown: In some cases, after tooth preparation and impression taking, the dentist may place a custom temporary crown to protect the tooth until the final crown is ready.

Crown Fabrication: Based on the impression and data obtained, the dentist or dental technician fabricates the crowns. This process may take several days during which you may use the temporary crown.

Final Crown Placement: Once the crown is ready, it is placed on the tooth. The dentist checks if the crown fits in terms of shape, color, and bite. If everything is satisfactory, the crown is attached to the tooth using special adhesive materials.

1. How long will crowns/veneers last? The lifespan of crowns and veneers can vary significantly depending on the quality of materials, level of care, and individual factors. However, with proper care and adherence to dental recommendations, crowns and veneers can serve for many years.

What material will be used for crowns/veneers and why? The choice of material depends on your preferences, goals, and the dentist's advice. Crowns and veneers can be made from various materials, such as ceramics, metal-ceramics, or others. Ceramic provides an aesthetic appearance and natural luster, while metal-ceramic combines the strength of metal with the aesthetics of ceramics.

Will there be pain or discomfort during and after the procedure? Some discomfort and temporary sensations may occur during the installation of crowns or veneers. However, the dentist uses anesthesia to minimize pain. After the procedure, slight discomfort or sensitivity may persist for a short period, but they usually subside over time.

The completion time of the crowns or veneers installation process depends on various factors, including the number of teeth, the need for additional procedures, and the preparation and fabrication of the prosthetics. Typically, the process may take several weeks, considering all stages, including consultation, preparation, and final placement.

Will I need temporary crowns/veneers before the final ones are installed? In some cases, the dentist may install temporary crowns or veneers while the final ones are being fabricated in the dental laboratory. This helps protect prepared teeth and maintains functionality and appearance.

Is special care required for crowns/veneers? To preserve the durability and beauty of crowns and veneers, it is recommended to maintain good oral hygiene, regularly brush teeth, use dental floss for interdental cleaning, and follow the dentist's recommendations.
